Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chaste tree berry, are often used as a female tonic. A tonic in the traditional sense is used to help restore, tone, and enliven systems in the body for improved health.
Vitex benefits both the body and the mind through its balancing and normalizing properties, and it is often used for support during life transitions.

Suggested use
Capsules:
Take 1 capsule 1-3 times daily, taking a break during menstruation. It is best to take the first dose first thing in the morning.
If pregnant, nursing or taking any medications, or using hormonal birth control, consult a healthcare professional before use.

General Vitex suggested use:
It is suggested to use it for 8-12 weeks or until desired results are achieved. Then decide to stop using it, use less, or taper down until not using it. Why? Speaking generally, we don’t wish to have a person using an herb forever. The hope is that we can guide the body to operate on its own without an herb. Vitex is generally very safe, and has been shown to be safe to use long term for the average person.
Optimal results with taking the first dose upon rising in the morning. Take a break from this herb during the menstrual cycle.

If trying to correct a cycle that is too long (between 32 and 45 days from the beginning of one period to the first day of the next cycle’s period), try taking 1-3 capsules/18-25 drops first thing in the morning during your luteal phase, the time between when you ovulate and when your period starts. Once cycle has been of the desired length consistently for 3 months, try stopping vitex.

Some of the research on vitex/chaste tree berry:

~ 93% of 1634 patients with PMS reported a decrease in, or cessation of, symptoms of PMS from using Vitex extracts over a period of three menstrual cycles (Loch EG, Selle H, Boblitz N: J Women's Health Gend Based Med 9(3):315-320,2000)

~ Observation by 153 gynaecologists of 551 patients with symptoms of cyclic disorders or PMS using Vitex over several menstrual cycles showed that over 80% were relieved of symptoms or stated that their condition had improved (Peters-Welte C, Albrecht M. TW Gynakol 1994;7(1):49-52)

~ Vitex extract improved PMS symptoms of irritability, mood alteration, anger, headache, breast fullness and bloating in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (Schellenberg R: BMJ 322:134-137,2001)

~ A favourable action of milk production in nursing mothers was observed in an early controlled study using a low dose (40mg daily) of Vitex. Milk production was approximately three times higher in the group using Vitex compared to the control group after 20 days of treatment (Mohr W. Hippokrates 1957;28:586-591)

~ A controlled trial of 161 male and female patients with acne for at least 3 months using Vitex extract resulted in an improvement in 70% of cases. The mechanism for this action is not clear but is thought to be due to a mild anti-androgen effect (Giss G. Rothenburg W. Z Haut Geschlechtskr 1968;43(15):645-647)
