Contagion, Medicine, and Community

I'm so proud of my mom for making that museum the treasure it is today!

I grew up hearing about how it felt to have measles (or was it the mumps?), to lose loved ones in the community to polio, and the after effects of living after diseases. Ever heard of an iron lung?

These days might be scary. But there used to be so many more demons lurking around corners. Modern medicine can improve there is no doubt. It can serve people better, more safely and compassionately, and with bigger and more integrative ideas of what health is. It has given us so much to be grateful for though, even if it's flawed.

When did you last worry about diphtheria, measles, or smallpox?
